65 Years from the start of battle for Tali-Ihantala– 25 June 1944

Published by Moso under Battlereports

Historical background

After rapid Finnish advancement in 1941, the Continuation War turned into years of trench warfare. In 1944, German forces were already retreating in the South (of Finland) and the Stavka (the HQ of the Soviet Armed Forces) decided to finish the war on the Finnish front. On June 9, just three days after the allied landings in Normandy, the Soviet Union launched a major offensive on Karelian Isthmus. The Soviet army forced Finns to abandon their defensive lines and on 20 June they took Viipuri, the second largest city of Finland at the time.

On 12 June, Marshal Mannerheim, the commander of the Finnish Army, requested help from the German ally. Already on 16 June, the detachment Kuhlmey arrives in Finland. A few days later, some Wehrmacht units arrive.

Finns concentrate all available units to Tali-Ihantala area to stop the Soviet attack. From 25 June to 9 July, the Soviet forces clash with the defenders, but can’t get through. Finnish Air Force and detachment Kuhlmey make 1020 bombing sorties against the Soviet troops, especially tanks. During the battle, Soviets loose ca. 300 tanks, 120-280 aircraft and 18,000-22,000 troops.

As the final result of stopping of the Soviet advancement, the peace talks culminate in cease-fire between Soviet Union and Finland on 4 September.

343 Kokutai

Published by MKG under Rules

Some time ago I’ve decided to start publishing a small articles describing  the famous air units or planes of WW2. I think it could be a nice addition to the Game and the great background for historical scenarios.

343-kokutai-fighter

We start with 343 Kokutai – a famous IJN elite unit, which was formed in last days of 1944 by captain Minoru Genda.  It was put in the download section and added to the Rulepack. Note: 343 Kokutai models and decals was released some time ago by Raiden Miniatures.

I’ve got a few next ideas, including such units 303 RAF squadron, Kommando Novotny, Night Witches and Tuskegee Airmen. If you got some nice concept – do wait and put it on our forum! I’ll gladly use the best of them.

Dutch Air Force published

Published by MKG under Rules

Today there is 59th anniversary of German invasion of Holland and to reminder these dramatic events we prepared the Dutch Air Force squadron list. In fact it is ‘two-in-one’ as it covers both Luchtvaartbrigade (Europe 1940) and Militaire Luchtvaart van het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (Pacific 194-42) which are completely different squadron lists. You may get it from Download section and, as always, it was added to Sturmovik Commander Rulepack.

Last two modules in our marathon!

Published by MKG under Rules

In last two months we published the five new expansions and today the last two ones are put on the page. At the moment, there are ten modules released (and two others are planned in the future), which makes the Sturmovik Commander very customisable miniature wargame.

‘Allies’ clarifies the rules of using alliances in the game. It also allows the players to field the allied squadrons without harming the balance of the game too much.

‘Nightfight’ is full-scale module, which brings complete, advanced rules of nightfighing which replace the core ones. Althought it allows to use new tactics and equipment, in fact it’s based on smart and uncomplicated system of crew skills modifiers.

And what next? At the moment I wish to finalise version 1.5 of the core rules, which should be ready soon. It is improvement of the rules based on our experiences and opinions from the players, so do not expect the revolution. It clarify some aspects, balance a few special rules, adds a two or three cool ideas and changes some orders to make them more useful.

Regia Aeronatica should be ready to publish second part of the month, but in the meantime there comes one extra squadron list, which I’ll keep in secrecy untill 10th of May.

‘Secret weapons’ module for download!

Published by MKG under Rules

Today we publish ‘Special weapons’ module, which allows you to add some exotic and uncommon weapons to your squadrons.

But, unlike the last fashion for alternate/weird/1946/etc. wars, the devices presented in these addition were used operationally during WW2. So, what do you waiting for?! Download and check, if there is an addition to yours squadron in it!

‘Incoming!’ module for download

Published by MKG under Rules

Today we publish ‘Incoming!’ module, which adds the rules of calling artillery by recon planes. I’m very happy with this expansion, because it is not only cool and elegant, but also allows to turn these small and underestimated tiny planes into deadly weapons of war!

Download and enjoy!
